USDA Rural Development Welcomes New Idaho State Director
IDAHO, February 8, 2024 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently announced the names of newly appointed staff positions in Washington, D.C.
Welcoming Richard Rush, newly appointed Idaho State Director for Rural Development
Richard (Dick) Rush was born and raised in Idaho and grew up on the family farm in Moscow. He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to his new role and wholeheartedly supports initiatives to uplift communities throughout Idaho.
Rush has served as the State Executive Director for the Idaho USDA Farm Service Agency under two administrations, and as Director of the Idaho Department of Agriculture under two Governors. He served as a Commissioner for the Idaho Soil Conservation Commission, was Administrator of the Idaho Wheat Commission and managed the businesses for the Coeur d’Alene Tribe. His reputation as a compassionate leader precedes him, having served as Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross for Greater Idaho. Earlier in his career, Rush served as Vice President of Natural Resources for the Idaho Association of Commerce and Industry and worked for Boise Cascade Corporation in two states. Beyond his distinguished career, Rush has actively supported the Idaho Employer Support of the Guard and Reserves. He has contributed to environmental conservation efforts as a member of the Ada Soil and Water Conservation District.
As a proud graduate of the University of Idaho, with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics and a Master of Science in the same field from the University of California Davis, his professional and educational journey reflect a deep commitment to Idaho and serving the public. With his diverse background and strong dedication, Richard is eager to help make a meaningful difference in rural development, and prosperity in Idaho. Richard finds joy in family life with his wife, Nancy, and takes pride in their three married children, and six grandchildren.

State Directors: Background
Rural Development State Directors serve as the chief executive officer of Rural Development in the states and territories and are tasked with carrying out the mission of rural development to the benefit of everyone in rural America. In conjunction with the guidance and support of the National Office, State Directors are responsible for promoting the mission and strategic goals of Rural Development and provide key leadership to develop and support a productive, diverse, and inclusive state workforce.
