Tennessee Homeowner Spotlight
Increasing the possibility of homeownership with USDA Rural Development and The Housing Fund
“Becoming homeowners changed our lives,” said Audra Smith. “After so many years of enduring the rising cost of renting, it seemed like our money was just going into others’ pockets, but as homeowners we are putting our money towards something that is ours.” Audra and Terrance Smith became homeowners in 2019 with the help of The Housing Fund, the Section 502 Direct Loan Program and preparation. “I did a ton of research and planning to make sure I was in a position to apply,” said Smith.
“We had a positive process and Angela was really helpful. She knew what paperwork was needed and what items needed clarification. There were only a few bumps along the way, but Angela put everything through the proper channels and advocated for us and with us,” said Mrs. Smith.
“So much education comes into this,” said The Housing Fund’s Angela Belcher who serves as a loan packager. “I act as an intermediary between customers and the USDA to help clients understand the process and the package. Being a packager allows the USDA to process more loans and serve more people in the middle Tennessee area.”
“Both of us are disabled. The USDA loan was the only loan we could get to buy a house,” said Mrs. Smith. “There is a pride that comes with owning your own home. You can make changes to your home without worrying about the landlord saying what you can and can’t hang on the walls. We are planning to make updates and adjustments one at a time and steadily increase our home’s value, which will allow us to benefit from our home in the present and in the future.”
For those looking to become homeowners, “I would say be patient throughout the process. Don’t give up,” shared Audra Smith.
