USDA NIFA Annual Report Highlights Programs and Projects
USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) provides leadership and funding for innovative programs that feed people and fuel progress advancing agricultural sciences. It was created to spur scientific innovation, education and Extension programs enhancing the work carried out by colleges and universities across the United States.
NIFA’s investments play a critical role in inspiring innovations and providing the crucial funding needed to pursue those innovations. This year’s Annual Report highlights how the agency is funding collaborative projects that are delivering real solutions and making a difference in the lives of the people of the United States and the world.

Reminder: Nominations Being Accepted for NIFA Hall of Fame
NIFA is seeking nominations for the NIFA Hall of Fame. May 30 is the deadline for nominations.
NIFA Hall of Fame inductees have worked, coordinated or supported activities exemplifying NIFA’s synergy of excellence in any combination of research, education and Extension approaches on local, regional, national or international levels. Inductees have also demonstrated a measurable and positive impact on the lives of citizens and NIFA's mission to invest in and advance agricultural research, education and Extension to solve societal challenges.
Nominations must include a completed NIFA Hall of Fame Nomination form and up to three endorsements/letters of support. Find NIFA Hall of Fame background information and criteria as well as a link to the nomination form here.
Nominations must be emailed to the Admin Operations Team at AdminOpsTeam.NIFA@usda.gov no later than May 30. Include “Hall of Fame Nomination Submission” in the email subject line.

Master Gardeners Help Provide Solutions for Gardeners
For over 50 years, the Extension Master Gardeners program has been training volunteers across the nation who have a passion for horticulture and assisting with gardening education in their community. Today, Extension Master Gardener programs can be found in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. This work is supported in part by USDA NIFA’s capacity funding.
Learn more about the program which has grown to more than 77,000 experienced and 12,500 new Extension Master Gardeners.
Ohio State University Faculty Visits NIFA
Scientists and researchers from the Ohio State University visited NIFA recently. During their day-long visit, NIFA Director Dr. Manjit Misra welcomed the group, and they heard from NIFA's national science liaisons and national program leaders.

NIFA Invests Over $6 Million in Commodity Board Research Topics
NIFA has announced more than $6 million in funding for 18 projects addressing research topics identified by commodity boards. These grants are part of NIFA’s Agriculture and Food Research Initiative. In Fiscal Year 2023, boards that submitted topics for co-funding support included the California Walnut Commission, Cotton Board, Kansas Wheat Commission, National Peanut Board, United Soybean Board and USA Dry Pea & Lentil Council.

USDA Seeks Members for Federal Advisory Committee for Urban Agriculture and Innovative Production
USDA is seeking nominations for four positions on the Federal Advisory Committee for Urban Agriculture and Innovative Production. USDA will accept nominations from May 7 to July 7. The 12-member Committee is part of USDA’s efforts to increase support for urban agriculture and innovative production. The Committee provides input on policy development and help identify barriers to urban agriculture as USDA works to promote urban farming and the economic opportunities it provides in cities across the country. Members include representative from urban and innovative agricultural production, higher education or Extension programs, non-profits, business and economic development, supply chain, and financing.

USGCRP Seeking Authors, Technical Inputs for Next National Climate Assessment
The U.S. Global Change Research Program has issued a call for public comment, authors and technical inputs for the Sixth National Climate Assessment, a publication that serves as the federal government’s “preeminent report on climate change impacts, risks and responses.” The program will be hosting three one-hour webinars about opportunities to participate.
