News from NIFA
NIFA Joins NSF and International Research Organizations in Future Proofing Plants to a Changing Climate
Climate change is challenging the sustainability and resilience of agri-food systems through long-term changes to temperature and rainfall, increased threats due to extreme weather events and shifts in pests and diseases.
To address this challenge, scientists need accelerated approaches in the plant sciences to translate knowledge across different plant and crop species. USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture has joined the National Science Foundation and scientists from the United Kingdom and Germany to launch a new international funding opportunity, “Future Proofing Plants to a Changing Climate.”
Learn more about this new effort.
Building A Better Peanut Plant
NIFA supports multiple competitive grant programs, but the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) is NIFA’s flagship and the nation’s leading competitive grants program for agricultural sciences. Researchers at Auburn University are using AFRI funds to investigate ways to build a better peanut. Learn more about their work.

Impact of NIFA-Funded Research and Outreach
New Michigan State Study Shows Innovative Machine Learning Techniques More Accurately Monitor PFAS In Drinking Water
Newly published research from Michigan State University scientists demonstrates how regionally specific machine learning-based modeling more effectively monitors levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) chemicals in Michigan drinking water compared to nationwide models.
PFAS, a class of thousands of “forever chemicals,” has been a topic of increasing concern over the last several years. Toxicological studies have shown links to numerous human health problems, such as cancers and disorders of the endocrine system, which controls hormone regulation, neurological development and other essential processes.
