Climate Change & Food Safety
The U.S. Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Library’s Agricultural Law Information Partnership is hosting a virtual event on Thursday, September 7, beginning at 10 a.m. EDT to examine climate change’s effects on food safety. Dr. Jodi Williams, NIFA National Program Leader in Food Safety, and Dr. Sheila Fleischhacker, NIFA National Science Liaison, will discuss how climate change is impacting food safety in both direct and indirect ways.
Additionally, there will be a Wikipedia editing training session and editing time will focus on food safety, climate change, and the impacts of climate change.

NIFA Listens Report Now Available
The NIFA Listens FY 2023 – FY 2024 Report is now available for download on the NIFA website. NIFA Listens is a biennial stakeholder listening opportunity to collect input to understand key challenges, promising opportunities and recommended top priorities related to advancing agricultural research, education and Extension. Notice of Intent to Extend and Revise a Currently Approved Information Collection
In accordance with the Paperwork Reduction Act and Office of Management and Budget regulations, this notice announces NIFA's intention to extend and revise currently approved information collection entitled, “Reporting Requirements for State Plans of Work for Agricultural Research and Extension Formula Funds.”
NIFA is proposing to change the collection title to “NIFA Reporting System,” include a new financial reporting module, modify existing reports to request digital persistent identifiers, and allow respondents to provide information on Co-Project Director(s) when applicable. White House Seeking Feedback on Potential Changes to Life Sciences Research Policies
The Office of Science and Technology Policy is seeking public comment on potential changes to the Policies for Federal and Institutional Oversight of Life Sciences Dual Use Research of Concern and Recommended Policy Guidance for Departmental Development of Review Mechanisms for Potential Pandemic Pathogen Care and Oversight.
These policies establish frameworks for review and oversight requirements for certain categories of life sciences research, namely research with certain pathogens and toxins, including at institutions that accept federal funding for such research. Help Keep Children and Families Covered
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is asking for help to prevent children and families from losing Medicaid or Children’s Health Insurance Program coverage as a result of the end of the Federal Public Health Emergency. Use CMS’s Communications Toolkit, available in multiple languages, and visit CMS’s website for more resources.

NIFA Invests More Than $1 Million for Children, Youth and Families at Risk Sustainable Community Projects
NIFA is providing more than $1 million in support to 12 projects focused on at-risk youths. The Children, Youth, and Families At-Risk (CYFAR) Program is a national program funded by USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture in the Division of Youth and 4-H. The CYFAR mission is to provide resources to the Land-grant University System and the Cooperative Extension System so that, in collaboration with other organizations, they can develop and deliver educational programs that equip at-risk youths with the skills they need to lead positive, productive, contributing lives.
NIFA Awards $10 Million to Extension Foundation for Workforce Development
Agricultural production and processing rely on an efficient and well-trained workforce. The readiness of this workforce may benefit from, and in many cases require, both informal training experiences, and formal worker certifications. USDA NIFA has announced an Agriculture and Food Research Initiative Education and Workforce Development award of $10 million to the Extension Foundation. Their project’s goal is to connect similar regional efforts, identify gaps in the workforce ecosystem, and provide adaptive, science-based proven solutions to address local and regional workforce issues.
NIFA Invests $459,000 to Address Disaster Prep, Response, Recovery and Mitigation in Food and Ag Systems
NIFA is investing $459,000 in three projects that address disaster preparedness, response, recovery and mitigation in food and agricultural systems. The Smith-Lever Special Needs Competitive Grants Program supports innovative, education-based approaches to address disaster preparedness and specific responses related to disasters or disaster threats caused by natural, human-made, or technological hazards, or by other factors that contribute to the exposure or vulnerability of a community.
