Fort Valley State Is Powering Up
Fort Valley State University (FVSU) is playing a role in bringing clean and renewable energy to residents of middle Georgia with a solar farm of more than 107 acres on its campus.
The facility, one of the largest solar operations on a college campus in the United States, consists of more than 27,000 solar panels and was built through a partnership with a utility company. FVSU did not incur any costs in the construction of the facility.
This solar project expands FVSU’s Cooperative Extension Program in Agricultural and Natural Resources to include renewable energy. FVSU’s Cooperative Extension Program is supported in part by USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture through capacity funding.
The solar farm also consists of a model demonstration site dedicated for academic and research use. It will serve as a power source for energy-dependent applications at the FVSU Sustainable Research Site. Read more about how FVSU is powering up its work.

Impact of NIFA-Funded Research and Outreach
Fact Sheets Provide New Insights into Agritourism and Direct Sales for U.S. States
A new set of fact sheets provides comprehensive insights into the demographics of U.S. farms that offer agritourism activities or sell food directly to consumers or both. The fact sheets are available for all 50 states and are intended to help local decision makers, farmers and the organizations that support them in their efforts to strengthen and expand agritourism enterprises.
Developed by collaborators at Penn State, University of Vermont, University of Maine and Oklahoma State University, each fact sheet provides the total number of farms in the state and the number engaging in agritourism, in direct sales and in both activities. They also include detailed demographic and business information about these farms, including farmer age and gender, crops grown, farm size, and farm income generated by agritourism and direct sales. Learn more about this NIFA supported research and outreach effort here.
