NIFA Leads Grants Workshop at Entomological Society of America Branch Meeting
NIFA National Program Leaders Michelle Samuel-Foo in the Institute of Food Production and Sustainability (IFPS), Rizana Mahroof in the Institute of Youth, Family and Community, and Program Specialist Carina (Teri) Allen (IFPS) hosted a four-hour workshop at the Southeastern branch meeting of the Entomological Society of America's annual meeting in Little Rock, Arkansas, March 12-15. The workshop centered on demystifying the grant writing process when applying to USDA-NIFA. The target audience was graduate students, early career professionals and minority scientists who have not traditionally benefited from federal funds. Attendees were overwhelmingly positive in their feedback, and even professors who did not attend reported that their students found the workshop extremely helpful. NIFA staff have been asked to provide the workshop at other regional Entomological Society of America meetings and are making plans to do so.

RRDCs Release Findings from National Listening Sessions on Rural Community, Economic, and Workforce Development
The Regional Rural Development Centers have released findings from a comprehensive initiative aimed at identifying the critical investments needed to build community capacity and improve quality of life in rural America. These centers and their work are supported by USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture. Their report can be used by a broad audience of practitioners, decision makers, and government agencies to inform where programmatic efforts and resources may be most effective in tackling key issues facing rural communities. The report summarizes results from eight listening sessions, which convened stakeholders in facilitated dialogues focused on regional and national issues. It also integrates qualitative data from a national survey conducted in Fall 2021, building on the quantitative survey findings published in 2021. Get the executive summary, full report, or topical and regional reports here.

Discovery of Root Anatomy Gene May Lead to Breeding More Resilient Corn Crops
A new discovery could lead to the breeding of corn crops that can withstand drought and low-nitrogen soil conditions and ultimately ease global food insecurity, according to a Penn State-led team of international researchers. In findings published March 16 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, the researchers identified a gene encoding a transcription factor – a protein useful for converting DNA into RNA – that triggers a genetic sequence responsible for the development of an important trait enabling corn roots to acquire more water and nutrients. Learn more about this NIFA supported research.
As a part of this study, researchers dug up and cleaned the roots of thousands of corn plants at sites in Pennsylvania, Arizona, Wisconsin and South Africa to analyze their phenotypes. Freshly excavated roots still in soil are shown in the inset. Courtesy of Penn State University.
