Research Expanding Opportunities for Commercial Seaweed Production

Seaweed aquaculture has great potential for growth in the U.S., but currently production is limited to a small number of farms that cultivate just one or two species of kelp. Supported by USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), a company in Maine is working to change that. Springtide Seaweed is addressing several challenges to expanding U.S. seaweed production beyond kelp with funding from NIFA’s Small Business Innovation Research Program (SBIR). Learn more about their work with dulse and nori seaweeds here.

Spinning food processing waste into ‘gold’

There is money to be made – and potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions – by finding a second life for the potato peels, fried dough particles, cheese whey and other industrial food-processing waste products that routinely end up in landfills, according to new research.

The Ohio State University scientists have taken the first step at estimating the best large-scale uses for food processing waste, first analyzing its contents and, based on those findings, proposing production opportunities ranging from sustainable fuels, biogas and electricity to useful chemicals and organic fertilizer.
