NIFA Listens: An
Initiative to Seeking Stakeholder Input - Help us spread the word that
NIFA is requesting stakeholder input related to the challenges, priorities and
needed breakthroughs in food and agricultural sciences through the “NIFA
Listens: Investing in Science to Transform Lives,” initiative. Four in-person listening sessions,
in combination with an online stakeholder input form, will offer stakeholders opportunities to provide
feedback to the following questions:
- What is the greatest
challenge that should be addressed through NIFA’s research, education, and
extension programs?
- In your field, what
is the most-needed breakthrough in science/technology that would advance your
agricultural enterprise?
- What is your top
priority in food and agricultural research, extension, or education that NIFA
should address?
We have created a website
filled with all the resources for stakeholders to learn about and participate
in this effort, including the Federal Register Notice, Press Release and a Fact
Sheet. Please encourage your networks to participate by developing thoughtful
answers to our questions, providing those through our stakeholder input form,
or by participating in person.

Caregivers are superheroes.
Managing medications. Getting to doctor appointments. Balancing work and home.
How can family caregivers handle it all? Even superheroes need tools!
Thankfully, new caregiving tools can help lighten the load. Each year, Caregiver Action Network (CAN) sets the theme
for November's National Family Caregivers Month. CAN recently announced that
this year's theme will be "Supercharge Your Caregiving."

Taking Steps to Prevent Falls as We Age. One in four adults aged 65
or older falls each year, often in or near their homes. While many falls are
minor, an older adult dies from complications from a fall every 19 minutes.
Falls are so common that if you are a caregiver of an older family members, I
am sure you can relate to this issue. The Administration for Community Living (ACL) is working with partners and people across the nation to
realize our goal of making community living possible for everyone. ACL
funds the National Falls Prevention Resource Center, which is leading the way in helping our
nation’s older adults prevent falls. The National Falls Prevention Resource
Center has developed excellent tools and resources for older adults, service
providers, and caregivers who are looking to do more to prevent a fall. Check
out this excellent webpage for tips, advice, and a great video- Preventing Falls: Tips for Older Adults and Caregivers
Identifying Challenges for Elderly Renters. The number of elderly
renters in the U.S. is expected to double to 12 million in 2030 as retirees
remain in their homes, a trend that can yield substantial savings but also
presents challenges. North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University
(NC A&T) researchers studied the obstacles faced by low-income elderly
renters who are aging-in-place and found that these seniors often struggle with
unaffordable housing, unsupportive home environments, and a lack of formal and
informal resources. Identifying these challenges will help local, state
and federal agencies develop practical strategies to support aging-in-place
renters. Read more about
this NC A&T research project.
