New Issue Briefing Available on The Opioid
Public Health Emergency and Older Adults. ACL
has authored a new issue briefing entitled “The Opioid Public Health Emergency
and Older Adults.” Opioid misuse and addiction have become a large,
nation-wide issue. Opioid use disorder can affect people of all ages; racial,
ethnic, sexual and gender minorities; income classes; and geographic
areas. Older adults are among the groups affected by this problem because
they often use prescription opioids to cope with painful chronic conditions,
such as arthritis, or procedures, such as surgery.
Bill Would Create a Task Force to Support Grandparents Caring for Grandchildren, as the Opioid Crisis Increases Their Numbers. Recently, the Senate HELP Committee unanimously passed the Supporting Grandparents Raising
Grandchildren Act
which would create a federal task force on grandfamilies and a one-stop-shop
for federal resources to help the families. The committee also adopted an
amendment to the bill offered by Sen. Murkowski to open the door for the
Department of Education and USDA to be included on the task force. The
bill will next need to be considered by the Senate floor and by the House.
