Kids Canal is a half mile stretch of the Ashley Central Canal that runs through the heart of Vernal, Utah. What looks like a simple open waterway has, for generations, served as a place where families fish, explore, cool off, and pass down stories of the valley. It is a living cultural landscape shaped by memory as much as by water.
When the Ashley Valley Watershed Flood & Irrigation Project proposed piping 9.6 miles of the Ashley Central Canal to conserve water lost to seepage and improve agricultural efficiency, the community quickly recognized that Kids Canal was at risk. Public outcry surged. Their message was clear: Kids Canal was not just infrastructure—it was part of Vernal’s identity.
