Follow the Chief: NRCS Helps Producers Maximize Water Efficiency in Arizona’s Arid Environment
Chief Bettencourt is putting boots on the ground, working with producers to implement voluntary, locally led conservation to help them help the land. Follow along as she meets with producers across the country to learn how NRCS has helped their operations.
During a visit to Maricopa County, Arizona, Chief Bettencourt met with Jacob Mayfield of Sunbelt Transplants, who grows onion transplants for producers across the country hoping to get an early start on onion crop production. He spoke with NRCS Chief Aubrey J.D. Bettencourt about how the local USDA Service Center helped him install a pumping plant equipped with an internal combustion power pump to improve his water-use efficiency by 20% and diesel fuel efficiency by 40% through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP).
Chief Bettencourt also met with representatives of the Gila River Indian Community, which has leveraged $66.8 million through the NRCS Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP) modernize over 60 miles of canal infrastructure. The projects have helped revitalize agriculture in the community – allowing for efficient delivery of water to 90,000 acres of land.
