  FSA Outreach Focus
Nominations are now being accepted for farmers and ranchers to serve on local U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) county committees. These committees make important decisions about how federal farm programs are administered locally. All nomination forms for the 2025 election must be postmarked or received in the local FSA office by Aug. 1, 2025.

Although farmers have been taking a limited deduction for the residual fertilizer purchased along with their farmland for many years, a push to extend and expand this practice beyond the traditional approach has been growing. In this webinar, Kristine Tidgren and Kristiana Coutu review the applicable law and the many questions that remain unanswered with respect to this deduction. They also remind those acquiring land about the risk associated with taking unreasonable positions on a tax return.

Myth: USDA gives grants to start farming.
Fact: USDA does not have grants to start farm operations. The Farm Service Agency (FSA) offers low interest loans which can be used to purchase farmland, fund business expenses or make improvements, but there are no grants to buy or start a farm. Other agencies such as NRCS have cost share programs to help new farmers with environmental resource concerns or purchasing a high tunnel, but these programs do not provide 100% of the funding. Beginning farmers may be able to secure grant funding from philanthropic, state, or other non-profits to help them start or expand a farm enterprise, but these are not offered by USDA and must be applied to with those organizations directly.
