The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) produces this weekly report using data and products from the National Water and Climate Center and other agencies. The report focuses on seasonal snowpack, precipitation, temperature, and drought conditions in the U.S.
Several NRCS SNOTEL sites in the western U.S. measured record or near-record low precipitation for the month of January. Following the unusually dry conditions, strong snowstorms deposited record or near record-breaking snowfall in northern California and parts of the Northwest between February 1–13. As of February 13, some regions are storing well-above median snowpack, while snowpack in the southwestern U.S. remains below median. Spring and summer water supplies in the western U.S. are largely derived from the amount of snowpack and the timing of spring snowmelt. The seasonal water supply outlook in the western U.S. will be better defined as the accumulation season progresses.
