A powerful storm swept through the southwestern U.S. between October 19-20, bringing excessive rainfall that caused dangerous flash flooding in New Mexico. The storm deposited 5.78 inches of precipitation in Roswell, New Mexico on October 19, breaking the daily rainfall record for the city set in 1901. The downpour produced dangerous flash floods that caused two fatalities and required the rescue of over 300 people by the New Mexico National Guard. The record-breaking event flooded numerous homes and businesses and forced the closure of all roads leading in and out of the city on October 20.
