American Indian artists invited to participate in art contest to celebrate AI/AN Heritage Month

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. – The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is honored to announce that NRCS in Washington (NRCS-WA) and the Washington Tribal Conservation Advisory Council (WTCAC) will be working together to create and distribute the agency’s national 2023 American Indian/Alaska Native Heritage Month Poster. Distributing a poster, with original artwork created by an American Indian Artist, is one of the ways that NRCS celebrates American Indian Heritage Month.
American Indian artists are invited to create an original painting that provides the artist’s interpretation of American Indian Culture and Heritage, keeping in mind the following theme that we selected to inspire this year’s artwork:

“We Belong Here.”

Rules

  • American Indian artists may submit their artwork for the poster.
  • Only one piece of artwork will be selected for the 2023 poster.
  • The winning artist will be paid the rate of $2,000.00 for their artwork.
  • NRCS has the right to reproduce and distribute copies of the artwork at its discretion.
  • The Washington Tribal Conservation Advisory Council and the artist will sign an agreement to set forth the terms of and rights of both parties.
  • The artwork is to be original, size 18” x 24”, in acrylic or oil on canvas.
  • A written narrative and title of the piece needs to be included with each entry.
  • Artwork will be judged on creativity and originality related to the heritage of American Indians and the theme, “We Belong Here.”

Instructions

  • Submissions are due by Thursday, Aug. 31, 2023.
  • All artists will need to email a digital high-resolution photo of their artwork to nathan.gallahan@usda.gov, along with the title and narrative.
  • The winning artist will need to mail the original artwork to:
         NRCS-Washington
         ATTN: Nate Gallahan
11707 East Sprague Ave, Suite 301
         Spokane Valley Wash. 99206

Timeline

  • The artwork will be judged between Sept. 1 and Sept. 14, 2023.
  • The winning artist will be notified Sept. 15, 2023.
  • The original artwork will then be digitized and included in a USDA/NRCS printed poster, which will include the artwork’s title, narrative, and artist information.
  • The artwork will be printed and distributed to NRCS offices across the nation in October, in time to celebrate the 2023 AI/AN Heritage Month in November!
