NRCS Solicits Comments on Proposed Changes to Technical Note 430-SS-2, “Soil Color Contrast”

Action Required By: February 24, 2023 

Technical Note (TN) 430-SS-2 provides guidelines to help soil scientists assign soil color contrast terms consistently. In general, updates were made to the technical note to explain color contrast when neutral or gley colors are present. 

Revisions to TN 430-SS-2 include:

  • Updating the “Purpose” section to include publication dates
  • Updating the “Introduction” section to clarify minor color components and soil color contrast classes
  • Changing the title of the “Procedure for determining the difference between hues” section to “Procedure for determining the difference between hues and chromas” section
  • Adding information about the National Cooperative Soil Survey, neutral colors, and gley colors in the “Procedure for determining the difference between hues and chromas” section
  • Adding the Gley 1 pages of the Munsell Soil Color Chart in the “Procedure for determining the difference between hues and chromas” section
  • Editing the “Tabular keys for soil color contrast determination using the Munsell color notation” section to be 508 compliant
  • Updating the “References” section to include current references
