New conservation data for FY2020 available in the RCA Data Viewer

New data on NRCS conservation program activities for FY2020 was recently added to the Soil and Water Resources Conservation Act (RCA) Data Viewer. The viewer’s conservation program data is also now available in easier-to-use Microsoft Excel file format. The new Excel files combine data from national, state, and program reports into a handful of “flat” files that can be easily read using R, SAS, Tableau, and many other software packages.  Each file includes multiple worksheets that offer data by program, practice, and year at the state and national level.  A new file that identifies practices by land use is also available.  Practices are associated with cropland, pasture, range, forest, farmsteads, and other land use/land cover categories.

RCA Data Viewer users can find conservation program data such as:

  • Program Financials – Conservation program financial obligations for financial and technical assistance to farmers and ranchers, by program, state, and fiscal year.
  • Program Contracts and Easements – Conservation program contracts and easements (count and acres covered) by program, state, and fiscal year.
  • Program Civil Rights Data – Conservation program contracts and easements (count and acres covered) for beginning, limited resource, socially disadvantaged, and Hispanic farmers and ranchers.
  • Conservation Practices Applied by Conservation Program and Fiscal Year – Conservation practices (count and acres) applied with NRCS technical or financial assistance by program, state, and fiscal year.
  • Conservation Practices Applied by Land Use, Conservation Program and Fiscal Year – Conservation practices (count and acres) applied with NRCS technical or financial assistance by program, state, land use, and fiscal year.
  • Conservation Practices Applied by Conservation Measure, Conservation Program and Fiscal Year – Conservation practices (count and acres) applied with NRCS technical or financial assistance by program, state, NRCS performance measure, and fiscal year.

Users can also find data on land use, soil erosion, prime farmland, and wetlands based on the 2017 National Resources Inventory (NRI), available at state, regional, and national levels, an extensive collection of maps based on NRI data, and publications from the Conservation Effects Assessment Project (CEAP).
