The winter solstice is commemorated throughout the world. In “A Persian Festival, Yalda, Celebrates the Triumph of Light over Darkness, with Pomegranates, Poetry and Sacred Rituals,” published in The Conversation, Pardis Mahdavi, PhD, states “Yalda celebrates the sunrise after the longest night of the year.” Families gather and stay up all night telling stories, reading poetry, and eating pomegranates, watermelons, and seeds. Pomegranates symbolize life and resilience. Watermelons keep the body healthy through the winter. Seeds remind us of the cycle of life.
