Did you know that pigeons have a long history with the military? Their abilities to focus on home and to travel long distances in difficult conditions made them successful and reliable couriers. In fact, the U.S. Army Signal Corps recruited messenger pigeons and handlers during World War I.
Bond between birds and trainer was deep. One handler risked his life to save the birds in his care. Stories of individual pigeons became famous back home, and many pigeons were next to veterans in victory parades.
Learn more about these brave birds in The Human Relationship with Pigeons: Forgotten War Heroes.
