Hugh Hammond Bennett began working for USDA in the early 1900s as a soil surveyor. He soon discovered the consequences of poor soil practices and was instrumental in making change. As the first leader of the Soil Conservation Service, he became known as the “Father of Soil Conservation.”
Bennett documented the effects of erosion in six photo albums held at the National Agricultural Library, Special Collections. Discover them here.
