ALERT: Importation Guideline #1116 Organisms and Vectors Import Modification
USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service sent this bulletin at 03/21/2014 01:52 PM EDTUSDA APHIS National Import and Export Service (NIES) Guideline #1116 has been modified to allow importation of inactivated and non-pathogenic microorganisms and extracted genomic material without a permit. The guideline was issues on March, 10, 2014 and is effective beginning March 17, 2014.
Before this modification, Guideline #1116 only allowed non-pathogenic microorganisms and extracted genomic material to be exempt from requiring an import permit. NIES has expanded this guideline to also include inactivated microorganisms. These materials do not pose a risk to animal health; therefore, this modification of the guideline is consistent with Part 9 Code of Federal Regulations, Section 122.
Beginning March 17, 2014, shipments of inactivated and non-pathogenic microorganisms and extracted genomic material, such as DNA and RNA, will no longer require an import permit. These shipments need only be accompanied by a statement indicating that the material is either non-pathogenic or inactivated.
Questions about these changes may be directed to the NIES Organism and Vector staff by calling 301-851-3300 and press Option 3. You may also send inquiries by email to ov@aphis.usda.gov .
