Reminder: Carefully Review NWS Inspection Certificate for Pet Dogs Moving (Exporting) from the United States to Mexico to Prevent Delays or Rejection at Border
USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service sent this bulletin at 09/21/2026 11:18 AM EDTDue to the detection of New World screwworm (NWS, Cochliomyia hominivorax) in the United States, Mexico requires New World screwworm inspection documents for travel of PET DOGS effective August 3, 2026. APHIS would like to highlight the importance of carefully reviewing and filling out the NWS inspection certificate for pet dogs moving (exporting) from the United States to Mexico. Improper or incomplete paperwork could result in animals and travelers either being denied entry or significantly delayed at Mexican ports. APHIS has added instructions for this NWS inspection certificate to the Pet Travel Website in order to provide additional guidance for accredited veterinarians. Please note that this document is to be issued directly by the USDA-accredited veterinarian and does NOT require APHIS endorsement.
Also: As of November 22, 2024, Mexico is considered to be affected with screwworm. All dogs (including U.S. origin dogs returning to the U.S. after traveling to Mexico) must meet APHIS requirements for screwworm freedom certification upon entry (re-entry) into the United States. Additional information can be found on the APHIS Dog Import Website.
