Import Alert:  Additional Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) verification required for all Canadian origin cervids imported into the United States.

Issuance Date: July 6, 2023

Effective Date: June 1, 2023

Effective June 1, 2023, additional CWD related verification is required for all Canadian origin cervids imported into the United States.  The additional verification by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is to ensure all imported animals meet the standards outlined in the U.S. Department of Agriculture CWD Herd Certification Program.  The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and CFIA are working to finalize the language for a formal health certificate addendum to be implemented by September 1, 2023.  In the interim, potential importers of Canadian origin cervids into the United States should request that the exporters consult with their local district CFIA office prior to initiating any export related processes/testing, to confirm herd / animal eligibility for export.

For any questions regarding import of Canadian cervids into the United States, please contact Dr. Mary Kate Anderson at (301) 851-3300, Option 2 or e-mail LAIE@usda.gov.
