On Monday, December 5, at 9 a.m. ET, USDA will launch a new initiative that will support President Biden’s Cancer Moonshot mission to end cancer as we know it by accelerating the preventative science and research necessary to improve nutrition in support of better health outcomes for all Americans. This initiative will also help the President achieve his goals of ending hunger, improving nutrition and physical activity, and reducing diet-related diseases as set forth at the historic White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health and outlined in the National Strategy released the day before the Conference.
According to the World Cancer Research Fund, 30-50% of all cancer cases are preventable by following a healthy diet and lifestyle. USDA is applying an equity lens to our ongoing and new research as we work to understand the connections between diet and diseases like cancer across different populations. Our enhanced focus on precision nutrition science will allow us to better understand the needs of underserved communities. This research complements our programmatic efforts to advance food and nutrition security – which means consistent and equitable access to healthy, safe, and affordable foods essential to optimal health and well-being – through the Federal nutrition assistance programs.
Please join USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack and USDA Chief Scientist & Under Secretary for Research, Education, and Economics Dr. Chavonda Jacobs-Young for a virtual event announcing USDA’s new initiative to better support nutrition research coordination and enhance community access to nutrition information.
In addition to announcing details about this new effort and sharing opportunities for how stakeholders can get involved, USDA will convene a panel of experts to discuss the role that nutrition plays in improving overall health and reducing risks for diet-related chronic diseases such as cancer. Discussions will highlight the importance of partnerships to advance research and data sharing as well as the urgent need to translate this body of knowledge into tailored recommendations that promote and elevate food and nutrition security.
Please register by 5 p.m. ET on Friday, December 2, 2022, to be among the first to learn more about how USDA is putting food first to improve the health and well-being of all Americans, including YOU! You will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. Closed captioning and American Sign Language interpretation will be available.
