Do you import dogs into the United States for purposes of resale – such as commercial sale or adoption? If so, you may need to obtain an import permit from USDA Animal Care. Under the Animal Welfare Act regulations, individuals and businesses (including non-profit organizations) must obtain a permit to import a dog into the United States for resale purposes. To help ensure you have all the information you need to comply with these requirements, Animal Care has created a webpage.

This new webpage, located here, includes a question-and-answer factsheet that explains the federal requirements, lists exemptions, and provides contact information if you need additional information. The purpose of our permit requirements is to ensure the safety and health of the dogs being imported and all animals they come in contact with once they are in the United States.
