USDA Animal Care has posted a newly designed version of the Animal Welfare Act and Animal Welfare Regulations that features numerous updates and upgrades.

This version has a topical index (with hyperlinks) and a more complete table of contents. We designed it to be easily readable by reducing the text from two columns to one. We’ve also included a table that spells out acronyms for easy reference.

More than just a visual upgrade, this new version contains all of the regulatory changes we’ve implemented since we posted the previous version in November 2013, including: the Retail Pet Store Rule; Importation of Live Dogs Rule; and the revised definition of exhibitor

The new booklet is posted here. We encourage you to bookmark this link and use this electronic copy of the booklet, as it will always contain the most up-to-date regulatory changes. However, if you need a printed copy, please contact us at acwest@aphis.usda.gov [(970) 494-7478] or aceast@aphis.usda.gov [(919) 855-7100].

The Animal Welfare Act and its associated regulations set the federal standards for humane care and treatment that must be provided for certain animals that are: exhibited to the public; bred for commercial sale; used in biomedical research; and/or transported commercially.

At USDA Animal Care, ensuring the welfare of the animals we regulate is at the heart of everything we do.
