New AMS Research on Wholesale Produce Markets
From truck to trade, transporting and connecting produce with buyers relies on important wholesale produce markets—facilities where multiple fresh produce wholesalers are co-located. These markets play an essential role in the food supply chain, but their physical infrastructure, operational complexity, and reliance on transportation networks create unique challenges. AMS partnered with several research teams to create From Truck to Trade: Building Resilient Produce Markets, a new page with research and materials to better understand the challenges and needs of wholesale produce markets.
For market managers, the Wholesale Produce Markets Assessment reveals common themes on market infrastructure and areas for investment and The Agricultural Freight Transportation Planning Playbook serves as a guide to navigate the transportation planning process at various levels of government. Learn how AMS is working to fill gaps in information on these terminal markets and highlight their essential roles in our American food system.

UGROW Inc. was founded in 2017 with the goal of efficiently increasing access to locally produced healthy food for all residents of Columbus, Ga. UGROW Inc. observed challenges to Georgia’s small to mid-sized farmers, such as a lack of timely and cost-efficient methods for getting their products to market. In 2021, UGROW Inc., received a Local Food Promotion Program (LFPP) grant for $745,000 to begin the Food and Wellness Hub Initiative Project, which included an indoor farmers market, a mobile market, and a shared kitchen. Since receiving the grant, local producers that had previously left the community have returned and UGROW has expanded into communities outside of Columbus.
