U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack has proclaimed the week of August 4-10, 2024 as National Farmers Market Week to recognize the vital role farmers markets across the United States have in providing access to fresh, locally grown produce to millions of Americans. Farmers markets also support USDA's Food System Transformation framework by helping build a fairer food system that works better for farmers, their families, and their communities. National Farmers Market Week recognizes and champions the efforts of direct-to-consumer markets, small- and mid-size producers, and the customers and communities that choose local.

USDA’s Local Food Directories make it easy for customers to find fresh local foods through five avenues: Agritourism, Community Supported Agriculture (CSAs), Farmers Markets, Food Hubs, and On-Farm Markets. This resource can be used by customers to find nearby markets and specific market items with mobile compatibility. Market managers are also able to update their market information through this directory. Both managers and customers can learn more about using the directory here. Hear from one small business, Botanical Bites, about how the Local Food Directories have supported their business. |

The Oklahoma State University Extension Office (OSU Extension) is in Northeast Oklahoma City (NE OKC), a 20-square mile area of roughly 33,000 residents. Urban food producers dedicated to increasing fresh food availability in the community have struggled with limited options for sales and distribution of products within the region. To address this, OSU Extension received a Farmers Market Promotion Program (FMPP) grant for $216,354 in 2020 to establish a local farmers market intended to bridge the gap between producers needing sales outlets and consumers seeking fresh food. Through this project, a farmers market was established and gave 21 vendors access to new market opportunities, 10 of which were beginner farmers. Additionally, 76 vendors participated in the OSU Extension’s Farmers Market Vendor Resource Fair between 2021-2023, learning about licenses, regulations, and marketing for farmers markets.
