Administrative Leave for COVID-19 Vaccinations

Administrative Leave for COVID-19 Vaccinations

Effective April 12, 2024, the Safer Federal Workforce Task Force was dissolved resulting in the Department sharing updated guidance on the use of administrative leave for COVID-19 vaccinations.

  • Employees receiving a COVID-19 vaccination, including boosters, during work hours may be granted up to four (4) hours of administrative leave. The four (4) hours may include the travel to / from the vaccination site. If less than four (4) hours of administrative leave is needed for vaccination, then only the needed amount of administrative leave is granted.
  • Advanced supervisory approval is required for the administrative leave. Supervisors retain the authority to approve the administrative leave so long as it does not interfere with mission requirements.
  • Administrative leave or overtime may not be granted for COVID-19 vaccinations received after duty hours.
  • Administrative leave may not be granted when an employee:
    • Is assisting a family member in getting a COVID-19 vaccine, including boosters,
    • Has an adverse reaction to a COVID-19 vaccine, or
    • Has COVID-19 symptoms and is isolating while actively seeking to be tested.

An employee may request and be approved sick leave or other paid time off including utilizing scheduling flexibilities, if under maxi-flex, for these purposes.

  • Weather and Safety Leave (WSL) may not be granted in connection with COVID-19.
