USDA is committed to providing clear, consistent national standards for organically produced agricultural products sold in the United States. The USDA National Organic Program (NOP) periodically sends formal memos to organic certifiers and the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) to communicate program progress on specific topics.  

NOP Memos to Certifiers 
NOP recently issued two memos to USDA-accredited certifiers. One memo to certifiers addresses ion exchange filtration in organic production and communicates a recent NOSB recommendation.  

The other memo describes the benefits of identifying transitional operations in the Organic Integrity Database, the importance of using the organic system plan as a planning tool during an operation’s transition to organic, and how these listings will support other USDA programs verifying the status of listed operations for transitional crop insurance or market development grant evaluations. 

NOP Memos to the NOSB 
NOP also supports the ongoing work of its advisory committee, the National Organic Standards Board. NOP has issued two memos to the NOSB to support their ongoing activities to serve the community. The first memo responds to recommendations from the NOSB Spring 2023 Meeting and summarizes the program’s current regulatory priorities.
