USDA Features the National Peach Council

Reach for a Peach this Summer: It's Peach Season!

The USDA Farmers Market is excited to welcome the National Peach Council back to the market, and specifically the VegU tent.  We love partnering with the Council to introduce to some, and reintroduce to others, the very juicy, sweet flavored fruit. Peach season begins in June and lasts until the end of August, and they say that August is when peaches are at their peak.

The National Peach Council is a voluntary organization comprised of growers, packers, shippers, processors, and others affiliations with the U.S. peach industry. The council was formed in 1958 to unite the industry and provide a voice at the national level for issues they faced.

It is very important that USDA partners with the industry to bring local food and nutrition education to the community. Therefore, be sure to stop by the VegU tent on Friday for a 10-minute class between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to learn to cook grow, pick, prepare, and store peaches; as well as their nutritional benefits

WHEN

Friday, July 8, 2022. 10:00am - 2:00pm.  Open to the public.

LOCATION

The corner of Jefferson St and 12th St NW, Washington DC, 20250, outside of the USDA Whitten Building and alongside the USDA Farmers Market on the grounds of the USDA People’s Garden.

Meet Sammy Soil

Teaching people about soil conservation is one of our top goals at the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), and fortunately, we have a special helper.

Sammy Soil has managed to capture the public’s attention for more than 50 years. The little dirt clod was birthed through rock particles, water, air, leaves and the artistic mind of long-time employee Ernest “Howard” Whitaker.

We are excited that Sammy Soil will be joining this week's Farmers Market. To learn more about Sammy Soil click below.
