AmeriCorps Teams Get Things Done in Detroit

National service resources continue to support the cleanup recovery efforts in the Detroit Metro area from the record-breaking flooding that occurred August 11-12, 2014. Working with the Michigan Community Service Commission and National VOAD, AmeriCorps members are registering affected home owners for volunteer support, doing home damage assessments, and mucking and gutting homes.

Accomplishments to date include:

  • More than 30 members and staff representing AmeriCorps Disaster Response Teams from Conservation Corps Minnesota and Iowa, Texas Conservation Corps, Arizona Conservation Corps, and Montana Conservation Corps have served nearly 4,000 hours; mucked and gutted over 70 flood damaged homes; completed over 150 damage assessments; and cleared nearly 800 cubic yards of debris. New A-DRT teams will begin to cycle in this week to provide relief for the teams on the ground.
  • AmeriCorps NCCC has been on the ground since August 20 and has committed teams through early November.  A total of 11 teams (79 members) have deployed so far.
  • Senior Corps RSVP volunteers supported efforts by staffing the call center.

Senior Corps RSVP Volunteers Deliver Emergency Kits to Seniors

Toledo Blade (OH), October 24, 2014

"Sally Davies, Senior Corps RSVP program director, said the project kicks off a larger initiative to deliver more than 1,000 kits today to home-delivered meal clients in the county by various agencies. She spoke during a news conference at 9:30 a.m. in front of Ottawa Park District Station, where the volunteer program has its headquarters.  Volunteers this morning loaded the kits in trunks of the RSVP patrol cars. They used four decommissioned patrol cars — with two volunteers riding in each — to deliver the kits to isolated, older adults who live independently."

National Disaster Resilience Competition Webinar Replay

Listen to the webinar replay to learn about a new grant opportunity from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).  The National Disaster Resilience Competition will make available approximately $1 billion for innovative resilience projects at the local level.

By partnering with eligible applicants, CNCS programs will have ample opportunity to join HUD-funded community resilience plans and provide service in several of the agency's focus areas.  These HUD funds could be an effective strategy to grow national service programs, while helping communities become more resilient following a disaster.

Also feel free to review the following links for more helpful information:

The replay is available at 1-866-509-6761 until Dec. 22, 2014.
