National Service Responds to Flooding in Detroit, MI

CNCS staff members and AmeriCorps NCCC members and respond to flooding in Detroit, MI


MI: Flooding 

  • On August 11-12 the Greater Detroit area had record breaking flooding that affected homes in and around Detroit, MI. 
  • The Michigan Community Service Commission is the state’s lead agency for coordinating volunteers working closely with local and National VOAD partners.  For more information on the Michigan Community Service Commission response to the flooding follow them on their Facebook page 
  • One  CNCS staff member with the DSU and two CNCS staff members with the Disaster Response Cadre have been deployed to Detroit, MI to support the Michigan Community Service Commission in their response efforts. 
  • Four AmeriCorps NCCC Teams (29 members) from the North Central Region Campus in Vinton, Iowa have been deployed to assist the Michigan Community Service Commission, NECHAMA Jewish Disaster Response, and ICNA Disaster Relief with recovery efforts. Members are supporting the Recovery Coordination Center and Multi Agency Resource Centers by registering affected home owners for volunteer support, doing home damage assessments, and leading volunteers in mucking and gutting homes.

White House Innovation for Disaster Response and Recovery Demo Day

More than 1,500 people participated online and in-person at the White House Innovation for Disaster Response and Recovery Demo Day.

Executive Masters in Emergency Management & Preparedness

Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies (SCS) will provide Segal Award recipients an additional 15% scholarship each semester for all Master of Professional Studies (MPS) programs, Executive Master of Professional Studies (EMPS) programs, and the Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies (BALS) program. Tuition rates are adjusted annually and go into effect at the conclusion of each spring semester. This scholarship shall not apply to study abroad programs or any additional fees levied by Georgetown University. Students must remain in good academic standing according to the standards set forth by the SCS Office of Academic Affairs in order to continue receiving the scholarship.
