Dear members of the AmeriCorps VISTA community,

It is my honor to welcome Paul Monteiro as the new Director of AmeriCorps VISTA.

Paul brings an impressive record as a public servant dedicated to improving the lives of his fellow citizens.

Most recently, Paul served President Obama in the Office of Public Engagement at the White House. He was a liaison to many constituencies, including social safety net groups.  In that role, he was responsible for long-term strategic planning related to critical investments in low-income communities. He executed creative programs that invited Americans to take a more active role in their government.

Paul also led a mentorship program for young men, an initiative designed to invest in local high school students through community service and professional development.

A graduate of the Howard University School of Law, Paul’s accomplishments are impressive. Several national and local non-profits have applauded his exceptional leadership and contributions to public service. He is someone who builds bridges and gets results.

Paul joins us on Monday, April 28. After accepting this appointment, Paul sent a short note expressing why he wants to lead this amazing anti-poverty program that has transformed communities and individuals for nearly 50 years:

Wendy,

Thank you for welcoming me to the National Service Family.  I am honored and humbled to serve as the next Director of AmeriCorps VISTA.

I sincerely believe that service to our neighbors is the hallmark of citizenship.  Working with the state office staff, and informed by the VISTA team, I look forward to continuing the program’s legacy of creative collaborations with new partners and welcome the challenge of expanding its base to build on the program’s already impressive reach and impact.

The everyday sacrifices made by AmeriCorps VISTA members inspire me.  As the Director, I look forward to working together to support them in every way possible.

As we approach VISTA’s 50th anniversary, it’s an honor to join a team focused on advancing its unique mission in support of our neighbors in need and sharing its remarkable story throughout the country.

Yours in service,

Paul

Warmest Regards,
