As part of a Champions of Change event, the White House honored AmeriCorps alum Germain Castellanos, current program director of the SHINE Educational Leadership Program in Illinois, and AmeriCorps member Xavier A. Muñoz, who serves with the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia. Chosen because they embody the spirit of Chavez’s legacy, Castellanos and Munoz have committed themselves to improving the lives of others in their communities and across the country.

More than 1,750 Mayors Unite to Recognize Impact of National Service
Number of Participating Mayors Doubles Last Year’s Total
More than 1, 750 mayors from all 50 states and the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico are standing together in support of AmeriCorps and Senior Corps by participating in the second annual Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service tomorrow. Together, these mayors represent more than 110 million citizens, or one-third of all Americans.

YWCA AmeriCorps Members Take Teen Dating Violence Message to Alabama Schools
Understanding that prevention is a key to breaking the cycle of domestic violence, the YWCA Central Alabama’s Healthy Relationships program focuses on building solid relationships at an early age.
Championed by AmeriCorps members Katie Reed and Jessica Altice, the YWCA’s Healthy Relationships outreach is a division of the YWCA’s Domestic Violence Services Department.
