Hurricane Sandy UPDATE 11/10/12


The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) has deployed national service members and staff to the Hurricane Sandy impact regions.  Below is a synopsis as of 10:00 p.m. on Friday, November 9, 2012:

  • IN TOTAL, more than 1028 national service members have deployed and are serving in disaster-affected communities.  Of those:
  • 596 AmeriCorps and Senior Corps members to assist with shelter operations and other response activities
  • 432 members of FEMA Corps, an AmeriCorps NCCC unit, have deployed or are being re-routed to New York and New Jersey to support FEMA Emergency Response operations in storm-impacted communities.  Currently:
         - 212 FEMA Corps members are on the ground in New York 
         - 220 FEMA Corps members have reported to New Jersey

NATIONAL SERVICE DEPLOYMENTS
UPDATED Red Cross Preparedness and Response Corps
October 31st  
40 members have deployed to support the American Red Cross with shelter operations, mass care, and Emergency Response Vehicle operations in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. 

CONNECTICUT
The CNCS CT State Office distributed a list of Red Cross volunteer needs to AmeriCorps VISTA members in response to offers of assistance from VISTAs and in response to requests for help from the Red Cross. CT AmeriCorps Alums is also distributing volunteer opportunities to its network.

MIDDLETOWN AND BETHEL, CT
Health Service Corps and Public Ally
November 1st  
24 members are volunteering with the Red Cross at two locations: a bulk distribution center in Middletown and a food distribution site in Bethel.  

LONDON COUNTY, CT
United Way of Southeastern Connecticut AmeriCorps VISTA 
October 31st  
3 members from the United Way of Southeastern Connecticut VISTA Program are surveying feeding sites and townships on behalf of those who need blankets, water, and food support beyond local capacity.  Several additional AmeriCorps VISTA members are joining the three United Way of SE CT VISTAs at a food distribution center to distribute food to people in New London who have been without power for almost a week.

Bridgeport Foster Grandparent Program
October 31st  
Bridgeport Foster Grandparent Program has identified resources on counseling children impacted by disaster so the Foster Grandparents can be prepared to meet the needs of the children they tutor when the children return to school.

AmeriCorps Together We Prepare Program

9 members have deployed to support the American Red Cross with shelter operations, mass care, and Emergency Vehicle Response operations.

FEMA Corps Deployment

220 FEMA Corps members have deployed to support FEMA’s Emergency Operations response. 

NEW New Jersey Community Development Center AmeriCorps Program
November 8th  
12 members have provided assistance at the 211 call center, assisting survivors and organizations gain information about programs available to support their recovery


NEW Newark, NJ
Great Oaks Charter School AmeriCorps Program
November 8th    
15 members have been supporting Recovery Newark, supplying support to bulk distribution of supplies and food


NEW Oceanport, NJ
AmeriCorps NCCC – Southern Region

10 members have been deployed to support the American Red Cross with shelter operations, the team will arrive on November 10th 

AmeriCorps State
October 27th 
30 members have deployed under the direction and authority of the New Jersey State Administration to assist with ESF-6 functions including shelter operations and mass care.  Several members have been assigned to assist at the Joint Field Office.

PATTERSON, NJ
St. Paul’s Community Development Center AmeriCorps Programs
November 5th 
members are supporting food pantries in the area, which are seeing increased usage due to Hurricane Sandy.


ATLANTIC, NJ
AmeriCorps NCCC - Southern Region

9 members have been deployed to support Save the Children with the Child Friendly Spaces program in New York City shelters.

College of New Jersey VISTA Program
November 2nd   
1 member has been temporarily reassigned to coordinate The College of New Jersey’s response including organizing student and faculty supply drives and service trips in partnership with the Borough of Belmar, NJ. 

ELIZABETH, NJ
AmeriCorps VISTA
November 1st   
4 members have been temporarily reassigned at Jefferson Park Ministries to coordinate distribution of dry goods to residents without power, and to provide support to more than 45 Foster Grandparent volunteers who are without power.  The sponsor organization is operating as a make-shift distribution center.

4 members are supporting the Trenton Soup Kitchen.  This soup kitchen has seen increased demand since the storm.

November 2nd   
1 VISTA has been reassigned to help recruit and coordinate volunteers for the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen.  The soup kitchen has seen an increase in patron numbers due to local power outages.

16 members have deployed to support the New Jersey State Service Commission with 211 Call Center Support and EOC support.

6 members will travel to Staten Island; on 11/4/12 six members will travel to Staten Island, leaving this 11/4/12 to support the National Park Service with fire prevention services.

18 members deployed on October 28th to support the American Red Cross with shelter operations in Albany, NY.  This team has now been moved to support shelter operations in Huntington Station, Deer Park, and Farmingdale NY.

November 3rd  
3 members coordinated a two-day beach clean-up at Misquamicut State Beach.  This event brought more than 125 volunteers on the first day of work, and more volunteers are expected today.

9 members have deployed to support the United Way with Volunteer Reception Center stand-up and administration.

20 members (approx.) are supporting the United Way 211 Call Center and shelter operations at the Barrington shelter.

2 members have deployed to support the American Red Cross with feeding operations.

STATE SERVICE COMMISSIONS

Commissions in the region activated for disaster response by reaching out to volunteers, asking them to pre-register to volunteer, and distributing newsletters to volunteers and AmeriCorps State programs informing them on how to be safe and how to volunteer. Commission staff along the Atlantic coast are monitoring the weather, conducting volunteer registration, and managing volunteer requests.  

Serve Rhode Island
October 29th

Serve Rhode Island has begun outreach and pre-registering volunteers to support recovery operations on their website.

Serve Rhode Island has deployed volunteers to assist at:

  • United Way 2-1-1 in Rhode Island to assist in collecting damage reports
  • RI Department of Health - Volunteer Food Inspectors going out to local restaurants who lost power
  • Westerly Emergency Operations Center
  • Westerly Chamber of Commerce - working to distribute passes to allow businesses access to their properties past road closures
  • Chariho High School - which is opening to provide showers for residents without power

Volunteer New Hampshire
October 29th
Volunteer New Hampshire has been activated as part of the State Emergency Operations Plan to oversee the management of volunteers and donations.  Volunteer NH has called on programs including NH Disaster Animal Response Team (DART), Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD), National service programs (AmeriCorps, AmeriCorps VISTA, and Senior Corps), and CERT teams to be on standby with volunteer rosters prepared.

How to Volunteer or Donate to Hurricane Sandy Response Efforts

American Red Cross Disaster Relief - Become an American Red Cross Spontaneous Volunteer by contacting Leslie R. Fletcher, Director of Volunteer Administration, at leslie.fletcher@redcross.org or (215) 405-8558 or (267) 246-4521.

Blood donations are needed not only because of the injuries caused by the powerful storm but also because 100 blood drives on the East Coast have been cancelled in 11 states. All blood types are needed right now. For more information on how to donate, go to redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-REDCROSS.

Salvation Army - The Salvation Army recommends having a three-to-five day supply of food and water for each member of your family as well as flashlights, medication and battery powered radios. It's never too early to make sure you (and your neighbors, friends, and family) are prepared for the next snow storm or natural disaster. 

Those interested in volunteering should register at www.disaster.salvationarmyusa.org. Please note that disaster service training is a prerequisite for volunteering in a disaster zone and not all registered volunteers will be called on to serve.

Philabundance – While it’s not guaranteed that your donation will go directly to a Hurricane Sandy victim, the Philadelphia nonprofit is currently facing a critical food shortage. You can donate to the organization at www.philabundance.org.

Jersey Cares - Anyone who wants to volunteer in NJ can call 1-800-JERSEY7.

Disaster Distress Helpline 1-800-985-5990

The Disaster Distress Helpline provides 24/7, year-round crisis counseling and support.  The Helpline is staffed by trained counselors from a network of crisis call centers located across the United States, all of whom provide:

  • Crisis counseling for those who are in emotional distress related to any natural or human-caused disaster
  • Information on how to recognize distress and its effects on individuals and families
  • Tips for healthy coping
  • Disaster-specific resources and referral information.
