COVID-19 Update: CARES Act

Dear National Service Partners,

From the start of this emergency, all of us at CNCS have been focused on providing grantees, AmeriCorps members, and Senior Corps volunteers with as much flexibility as possible within our existing authorities to help meet this moment. However, we recognized that there were several critical issues that the agency could not solve without congressional assistance.

I am pleased to share that this afternoon, Congress passed and President Trump signed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, which provides several important provisions that will help the agency, our grantees, and AmeriCorps members during this time. Specifically, the new law:

  • ensures AmeriCorps members can earn their full Segal AmeriCorps Education Award, even if their service is disrupted due to COVID-19;
  • allows AmeriCorps State and National grantees receiving fixed-amount awards to access their full federal funding based on member enrollment; and
  • expands the AmeriCorps NCCC upper age and program term limit for members to limit disruption during the COVID-19 emergency.

We are in the process of updating our CNCS Frequently Asked Questions and will post guidance about these new flexibilities as soon as they are available. If you have additional questions about these new flexibilities, please share them with your program point of contact.

And, in case you missed it, we have prepared a list of 10 ways individuals can safely help in their communities. This is available on Serve.gov, along with graphics you can download and share with your social media network.

Thank you for all you are doing to help members, volunteers, and staff during this time.

Warmest regards,
