Shout Out to Women in History, Women in Service

March is Women's History Month and the national service family sends a shout out to all the women who volunteer. Our latest Volunteering in America report found the rate of women volunteering is on the rise in the United States, and we see this commitment to service reflected in our AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs.

The 2018 Volunteering in America study reported nearly 40 percent of women volunteer compared to roughly 25 percent of men. Even more impressive is mothers and working mothers have some of the highest volunteering rates of all groups.

There is a strong connection between civic engagement and service. Volunteering is woven into the fabric of our culture and joining one of our national service programs provides just one way to get involved. Another way is to support AmeriCorps members and Senior Corps volunteers who engage millions of volunteers each year.

As National Volunteer Month approaches, we hope you take the opportunity to join your neighbors in local service projects and spread the word about the positive impact of national service programs where you live. Learn more about how you can serve in your community on the national service website.

We're sure the women in your life will appreciate it.

In service,

Mike Cys
Director, Office of External Affairs

Spare time in hand as a newly minted retiree, Janet embarked on a journey to find meaningful volunteer opportunities which brought her to RSVP-Northern Virginia. "Trying to find them on my own was becoming difficult and I heard about RSVP," she said. She had heard that about RSVP's personalized approach which includes asking volunteers about what their skills interests and passions are and then matching them up with volunteer opportunities. " I jumped on that." Janet said.

Volunteers from all across the state are coming to St. Joseph to assist with relief efforts as flooding concerns continue along the Missouri River. Service members through AmeriCorps St. Louis worked alongside area residents willing to give their time to prevent flood waters from getting out of control.

Many St. Joseph residents, answered the call. Fred Osborn arrived at the volunteer site with his family. "This is just an opportunity to give back," Osborn said. "It’s not my first flood, it's sort of what we do." Area volunteers had help, as organizations from across the state are all part of the effort. AmeriCorps volunteers from around the state along with members of the Missouri Baptists Disaster Relief were seen doing their part.
