Dear AmeriCorps Alumni,

As we enter tax season, this is a reminder that payments made using the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award are subject to federal tax in the year each payment is made. If your education award and interest payments total more than $600 in a calendar year, CNCS will send you an IRS Form 1099 to be used in preparing your income tax return.

Recently you may have received an IRS Form 1099 in the mail from CNCS. For a small number of you, these forms may have had a typo that shows you earned more than you actually did. The agency is aware of this error and corrected forms have already been issued and resent by mail.

In the meantime, AmeriCorps alumni can view and print the electronic version of their correct 1099 form on the myAmeriCorpsPortal.

After logging into myAmeriCorps, members should see navigation links on the left side of the screen. (Links displayed may vary by user.) Look for the navigation item labeled “My Tax Statements” that is highlighted in the sample at left.

After clicking on the "My Tax Statements" link, you will go to a "View Tax Statements" screen similar to the one pictured below to print your tax documents. Click on "2018" to view and print your 1099 form.

All education awards and interest payments made on your behalf are considered taxable, even if they do not total $600, and CNCS does not withhold taxes from these payments. It is considered taxable income regardless of whether it is used to pay current educational costs or to repay qualified student loans.
