You Look Like a Mentor to Us

As we transition from National Mentoring Month into February, we still encourage you to help us find more people to join this effort. Starting with the person in your mirror.

Mentors are everyday people who take an interest in their community and the nation's future through their work with the generations that will follow us. And your presence in the life of a young person can make a world of difference.

One out of every three young people lack a trusted adult they can turn to for advice and guidance, denying millions the impact a mentoring relationship can have on their lives.

Studies have shown that youth who have a mentor are:

  • More likely to attend and be more engaged in school
  • More likely to finish high school and continue on to college
  • More likely to form more positive social attitudes and relationships
  • And less likely to start using drugs

Leading by example, mentors become role models who help point children in the right direction. This special relationship — combined with the guidance of parents, guardians, and teachers — can be the difference between success and failure for many youth.

The Corporation for National and Community Service is proud to support thousands of AmeriCorps members and Senior Corps volunteers who are mentoring youth in real life. These national service members are changing the lives of millions from their preschool days all the way to college and careers.

Perhaps somewhere in your past, you can think of someone who took an interest in your life and provided guidance that you still remember. You could be that person for someone else today. To learn how, visit our mentoring portal.

You see, there are just a few qualifications for great mentors. They just need time to share and be willing to care. Everything else is icing on the cake.

On a sun-filled day, with a festive atmosphere, a small crowd of volunteers gathered to help new homeowners celebrate. The homeowners, some of whom have been homeless in the past, helped build or rehabilitate their own homes alongside volunteers. They now pay mortgages on a payment plan they can afford. “They made their own luck,” said Susanne Slater, president and CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Washington, D.C.

VITA Offices Staying Busy This Tax Season (AmeriCorps)

Tax season is in full swing, and tax offices have seen an increased amount of people coming in with their W-2 forms. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) has seen over 200 people since they opened last week, and that number is only going to grow. "I have been bouncing around from doing preparations helping review clients information so we can have it prepared to send out to the IRS," said AmeriCorps Team Leader Johnna Hockensmith. VITA offices have been open for a week, but Tuesday was their first day to be open since the IRS started taking returns.
