AmeriCorps members in VT Give Back for MLK

Thousands across the nation gave back to their communities for a day of service to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. In Vermont, volunteer help feed the hungry. Andrew Fusco became an AmeriCorps member in 2015 to help lessen the blow of his student loans. He spent Monday just like 119 other AmeriCorps members in Vermont – volunteering. This group was assembling take-home bags for kids in need at the Vermont Food Bank in barre.

Davis County students learn cost of wasting energy

Bloomfield is going gree with the help from Davis County Schools. AmeriCorps members visited with middle school students Tuesday to talk about renewable energy. It was a combined effort to celebrate the Martin Luther King Day of Service and to teaches students how to conserve energy. 

AmeriCorps VISTA unveils little Free Library on Riverwalk

Continuing with Monday's theme of service, the AmeriCorps Vista group teamed up with the United Way to add a unique element to Augusta's riverfront. The group unveiled a Little Free Library in front of the William Bartram Trail. The project allows residents of all ages to come and borrow a book in exchange for placing another in it's place.

Some community organizations, churches and schools hosting service projects throughout the nation this weekend in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day say they are experiencing an increase in participation. Hundreds of thousands of Americans join together every third Monday in January to honor the Rev. Dr. King’s civil rights legacy by partaking in community service across the country.

Groups help Boys and Girls Clubs of Acadiana repair flood damage

Americorps and Rebuilding Together helped the Boys and Girls Clubs of Acadiana rebuild their facilities. The groups helped install sheetrock and insulation to fix the damage done to the clubs by the historic flood. "We wanted to make our community better and that's what we're about community revitalization," said Jodee Ware, executive director, Rebuilding Together Acadiana.

Betty Sam watched Monday as volunteers painted the doors on her house and checked electrical sockets to help her return to her life before the August floods. Some 150 volunteers, through Rebuilding Together, a nonprofit housing organization, U.S. AmeriCorps and Louisiana AmeriCorps, spent Martin Luther King Jr. Day rebuilding houses and helping with the Boys & Girls Club of Acadiana.

Volunteers say mission of service on MLK Day rooted to endure change in White House

Upstairs at the Roots & Branches School, volunteers spent a weekend day building a sensory room, its walls hung with scrub brushes, ropes and sponges — tactile delights for the elementary-aged students. Downstairs, crews painted silhouettes of athletes around the gym, a surprise for the children when they return to the charter school in West Baltimore after the holiday weekend.

The Wounded Warrior Project partnered with volunteers from the Mission Continues, Team Rubicon, AmeriCorps and area colleges to clean up several properties in East Baltimore Monday. Volunteers help families rebuilding after August floods

Five months ago, Betty Sam’s home was inundated with water and sewage. Not only did the structure sustain significant damage, but she lost much of her furniture and other household items. Late last week, Sam finally was able to move back into her house in the Derby Heights subdivision. She said she hopes it will be fully repaired and rehabilitated by the end of this week.

Born to Read specializes in teaching parents about early language development. “I think Born to Read fits really well with our program goals,” Grubbs said.

Nel Fields is a community organizer with 15 years of experience. In 2001, the first local Martin Luther King, Jr. breakfast focused on engaging with people of color to meet, bond, and develop relationships.

Volunteers in bright yellow vests converged on downtown Johnstown Monday afternoon to promote the Johnstown Free Medical Clinic. Many of them were from AmeriCorps, and they were handing out pamphlets and telling people about the clinic's outreach programs, particularly the needle exchange program. One of those vest-clad volunteers was Andre Davis, the clinic's intensive care manager.

The seminar will be used to better understand the public health crisis caused by the current opioid epidemic. Duckworth said in a statement that the work the group does “is an example of the best our nation has to offer.”

Claflin University’s Saturday Academy volunteers spent their Martin Luther King Day helping at the Orangeburg SPCA. “Every year we do two service projects, one on 9/11 and one on MLK day,” Saturday Academy Coordinator Sierra Wald said. “We try to do something outside of our normal realm.” Roughly 40 Claflin University students honored Dr. King on Monday through their service at the SPCA.

It wasn't awful, but it was bordering on "slum and blight," which was a real shame considering he recently had paid to have new windows installed.

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank on Wahoo Drive in Williamsport was a busy place to be on Monday. Volunteers packed about 500 boxes of food for area senior centers.

Students from Jones Elementary School in Asheville are giving back to their community -- they're planting trees in Hominy Valley Greenway. Barrios Bellos, or Beautiful Neighborhoods, is an initiative to rejuvenate neighborhoods and improve communities. About 500 people enlisted to help with this weekend's two-day event cleaning up trash, removing graffiti and participating in a children's rally in which students drew how they imagined beautiful neighborhoods.

During that time, she accumulated AmeriCorps t-shirts from all over the world. Jackie wanted her mom to make quilt from her retro shirts. She shipped the t-shirts to her mom.

The park said several areas inside the animal park were approved to receive AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps work from the organization. The AmeriCorps NCCC is “a full-time, team-based residential national service program for young adults who want to give back to communities in need at different locations across the country,” according to its website.

New downtown Albion College center ties communities together

An educational and career services center for college students and city residents is now open in downtown Albion, 101 N. Superior St. The Ludington Center is the college's latest stride to connect itself with the city. It is set to be the new home for several college organizations, as well as a community career and internship center, according to an Albion College news release. Hopple volunteers to aid Gatlinburg fire victims

The Peace Corps and the Small Business Administration are partnering to help Peace Corps volunteers find jobs either in entrepreneurship or in the federal workforce after their service ends. Maria Contreras-Sweet, the SBA administrator, and Carrie Hessler-Radelet, Peace Corps director, signed a Memorandum of Understanding that essentially says that SBA and Peace Corps will work together to educate Peace Corps volunteers about entrepreneurship, especially those involved in business and economic development, and will help find jobs for Peace Corps volunteers upon completion of their service.

The countywide program pairs adult helpers with homebound people in need. “I take my companions grocery shopping or to doctors’ appointments mostly, but some days, we just go for drives so they can see something new,” Shipley said.

Arthur McDonald works 20 hours a week but he doesn’t stop working when that time is up. McDonald, who does maintenance and custodial work at Buchanan Manor, Wheatland, where he lives, volunteers his services to the tune of about 4,500 hours over the last two or three years. And, on his day off, he volunteers at the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. Buchanan Manor Manager Paul Wooley nominated McDonald for a volunteer award through National Church Residences, which owns Buchanan Manor.
