National Service News

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

In the spirit of this holiday weekend, please take time to recognize the contributions our national service members and Social Innovation Fund grantees are making across the country to improve the lives of millions of Americans.

This week, we recognize SIF programs that are taking innovative solutions and making them work for people across the state of Washington. Also, we recognized Senior Corps leaders at a national convening in Northern Virginia, which included a cameo appearance from The World's Most Famous Senior Corps Foster Grandparent.

And as we recognize national service members helping Louisiana recover, keep in mind September is National Preparedness Month. CNCS CEO Wendy Spencer recorded a video with a call to action for us all.

Scroll down to read national service headlines from across the country and learn what you can do during the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance.

Thanks and enjoy the long weekend,

Ted Miller
Chief of External Affairs
Corporation for National and Community Service

P.S. Last week we asked you to vote for national service in the Washington Post's poll to determine their next editorial topic. We can say that unofficially it shows that the national service topic got the most votes. Way to go, Team National Service!

What Works Dispatch. It's no surprise that when it comes to Washington, innovation is part of the state's DNA. After all, it's home to Amazon, Starbucks, Microsoft, and many of our Social Innovative Fund grantees. This week, we met with elected officials and SIF grantees to discuss and share examples of what is working in Washington and how to make it work for more people. One example is the Homestead Community Trust in Seattle (see photo of tour). These folks are tackling an issue facing many communities -- affordable housing for low- and middle-income families. And we learned in Olympia that SIF Pay for Success grantees are crunching data to find solutions for those struggling with homelessness and other chronic challenges. Check out the series of the  What Works Dispatch on our blog to learn more.

Boots on the Ground in Louisiana. Hundreds of AmeriCorps members and Senior Corps volunteers remain on the ground in Louisiana, helping residents begin to rebuild their homes and communities. This week, CEO Wendy Spencer joined Rep. Garret Graves in Baton Rouge (photo above) to see AmeriCorps members in action and thank them for their commitment to service. But the appreciation for our national service members far exceed the national service family. Check out what Gov. Bel Edwards, Lt. Gov. Nungesser, and other elected leaders did to show their appreciation for AmeriCorps and other national service members #GettingThingsDone in Louisiana.

Champions of Service for a New Era. This week, Senior Corps invited program directors to Reston, Va., for the annual program directors training event. This year’s theme is Senior Corps: Champions of Service for a New Era. CNCS CEO Wendy Spencer expressed appreciation for all Senior Corps programs and wished RSVP a Happy 45th Anniversary. As part of the day, Senior Corps directors received a special letter of appreciation from President Obama and were surprised with a guest appearance by Foster Grandparent Virginia McLaurin, whose granddaughter just signed up to become a Foster Grandparent as well! Service for a New Era, indeed!

September 11

September 11 Day of Service. Next Sunday, we will mark the 15th anniversary of the horrific attacks that took place in New York, Washington, DC, and in the air over Pennsylvania. Since 9/11, millions of Americans have come together to serve in honor of the victims and survivors. Find volunteer opportunities and learn how to organize your own service project. Also, tell us about your volunteer experience on social media using #911Day
