AmeriCorps
A more aggressive approach to cutting unemployment in
Mountain View
The Alaska Dispatch (AK), August 27, 2016
To help curb high unemployment in Mountain View, long one of Anchorage's
poorest neighborhoods, AmeriCorps volunteers will canvass community events or
knock on doors, find people who are looking for work and guide them to
state-run job training services, state and local officials said Thursday.
Nearly one in four Mountain View residents may be looking for work, a much
higher rate than the rest of Anchorage, according to the latest U.S. Census
Bureau data. Many Mountain View residents don't have cars, which makes it
difficult to travel to the closest state-run job center in Muldoon

for their one year commitment of service. For many of our members, their year
of service is the first time they experience personal poverty. Yet there are
those among our ranks who are all too familiar with the sacrifices and
hardships faced by those who live without access to resources and employment
options.

RSVP supports retirees who want to serve
Newsday (NY), August 24, 2016
Pegi Orsino, executive director of RSVP Suffolk, said insurer United Healthcare
found in a 2012 study that 42 percent of seniors surveyed did not volunteer
because they weren’t asked. That’s not an issue at the Retired Senior Volunteer
Program, which has offices in Smithtown and Amagansett. “We have taken it upon
ourselves to do the asking,” Orsino said. “Our mission statement says we
support older Americans who want to remain active in their communities by
offering them opportunities so they can engage in civic activities and make a
difference in someone’s life.”

The Gotham Gazette (NY), August 30, 2016
On July 14, former Bloomberg Deputy Mayor Linda Gibbs and Robert Doar, former
commissioner of anti-poverty efforts, participated in a panel discussion in
Washington, D.C., fielding questions about the poverty-fighting efforts they
led through New York City’s Center for Economic Opportunity. It came just after
their written series on the CEO and the Bloomberg approach to reducing poverty
in New York, in which they argue for it as a national model
