Texas Flooding - Boat Response

The OneStar Foundation has worked with Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) to bring resources and support to help disaster survivors in the aftermath of this flooding.  These organizations, like the American Red Cross, have sponsored AmeriCorps teams to provide critical disaster response resources to the affected communities.  Through partnerships with VOAD groups, critical disaster relief, like debris clearance and home clean-up, are more accessible to residents and disaster survivors.

Damian Morales, OneStar’s Program Specialist for Disaster Services, has shown resilience, strength, and leadership throughout this trying time for the state, ensuring that national service efforts are maximized and volunteer efforts are coordinated and operating smoothly.

On Tuesday June 7, ten AmeriCorps NCCC members from Sacramento, Calif. will deploy to the greater Houston area in response to the historic flooding to support efforts from the American Red Cross. An AmeriCorps NCCC team from Denver, Colo., who is already working under the leadership of the OneStar Foundation, will be redirected to assist the Texas Baptist Men Disaster Relief efforts. Texas Conservation Corps remains on standby ready to provide additional support as needed.

Senior Corps RSVP volunteers from RSVP of Southeast Texas, sponsored by the Evelyn Rubenstein JCC Houston, are assisting with disaster response and recovery efforts.  RSVP volunteers worked the Brazos Valley CERT to provide assistance with shelter operations and damage assessment calls. RSVP volunteers served with Langetree DUCK Farm and Eco Center to work with disaster survivor personal needs assessments.  These volunteers helped to identify assistance needed and make referrals to other service organizations.  In Brazoria Country, 15 RSVP volunteers served with the Homeland Preparedness Project and staffed three area shelters for disaster survivors.

Texas Call for Volunteers - Virtual Crisis Cleanup

Texas OneStar Foundation

Communities across the State of Texas are in need of volunteer support to assist with ongoing flood recovery efforts.

Volunteers (especially those who are bilingual) are needed to help staff a virtual call center operated by the nonprofit Information Technology Disaster Resource Center (ITDRC) on behalf of Crisis Cleanup (https://www.crisiscleanup.org).

Crisis Cleanup is an online database used by disaster relief agencies to coordinate cleanup efforts after disasters. Volunteers will speak with disaster-impacted homeowners throughout Texas and will enter their information directly into Crisis Cleanup.  This information will then be made available to voluntary organizations doing the mucking & gutting work.

Here's what you need to know:

  • AmeriCorps Members & Senior Corps Volunteers National service volunteers are encouraged to participate as available! Please check with your supervisor before volunteering.

NH Ready Corps

Volunteer New Hampshire recently launched “Ready Corps,” a new initiative to train and involve AmeriCorps members in disaster response.  Through this innovative initiative, national service members in New Hampshire can work with residents in New Hampshire to better prepare the state for disasters and respond when the needs arise.

Domenic DiNatale, Emergency Services and State Citizen Corps Coordinator, spearheaded the new program and provided the leadership to develop this statewide opportunity for national service members in New Hampshire.

Ready Corps was recently featured on America’s PrepareAthon!  See how their new program is improving the preparedness of New Hampshire residents.

National VOAD

CNCS Disaster Services Unit recently traveled to the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) Conference in Minneapolis, MN.  Member organizations from around the country came together to address challenges and share success stories of disaster survivor assistance and disaster recovery.
