Day of Service Saves Lives

Montclair Fire Department

In January, AmeriCorps Members along with students from Montclair State University in Montclair, New Jersey came together for the MLK Day of Service.  During this day of service, the AmeriCorps Members and MSU participants collaborated with the Monclair Fire Department for smoke detector installations in the community.

Along with the installation efforts from the Fire Department, volunteers distributed education materials and fire prevention literature.

Just over two months after this Day of Service, a home on Willowdale Avenue had a fire in the living room.  Because of the smoke detector installed in January, the family was alerted and able to put the fire out before it spread further.

Deputy Fire Chief Robert Duncan said, "The occupant was able to put the fire out with an extinguisher while it was still small. Because of the residents quick action in response to the smoke detectors activation, there was no risk to life, and property damage was kept to a minimum. The MLK Day of Service has already proved its worth."

Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day at CNCS

Daughters and Sons Day at CNCS.

On April 28, Daughters and Sons of CNCS staff joined with students from Lucky Elementary School for the annual Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day.

This group became AmeriCorps Members for the day and joined with many members of the CNCS team to see what a day at work was all about.

Members of the DSU staff participated in an a fun disaster game to find items for a home disaster kit.  They also worked on developing a Family Emergency Communication Plan.  These students gained valuable lessons in disaster preparedness, just in time for America's PrepareAthon! National Day of Action.

These students were featured on the National Service Snapchat Account! Add National Service on Snapchat and see all their fun activities.

West Texas RSVP

RSVP Volunteers in Texas

Janet and Greg Smith are volunteers with West Texas RSVP.  Recently, they volunteered with the City of San Angelo - Tom Green County Emergency Management.  The city and county emergency sirens were aging.  The Smiths researched alternative systems and contacted  other jurisdictions  to see how those systems worked.  The Smiths also updated the community resources list and put together a set of by-laws for a re-organized VOAD group in the area.  According to the local emergency manger, their effort helped to save hundreds of research and work.  They helped to update and offer a more comprehensive Emergency Operations Plan for the area.
