Update on Missouri Flood Response

AmeriCorps Programs responding to Missouri Flood Response

AmeriCorps Disaster Response Teams (A-DRTs): AmeriCorps Disaster Response Teams (A-DRTs) have been responding to the historic Missouri floods since December 29. In the first four days, AmeriCorps St. Louis ERT members led 550 volunteers in filling and stacking 50,500 sandbags across multiple communities.

Since then, additional A-DRTs have traveled to Missouri in partnership with Missouri State Emergency Management and FEMA to coordinate and directly assist the cleanup effort. To date, 144 A-DRT members and staff have mucked/gutted 276 structures, removed 11,258 sandbags, conducted minor repairs on 52 homes, and treated 45 homes for mold. The field operations de-mobilized on March 1 and a small team will continue supporting early recovery efforts until April 5. Response teams include: AmeriCorps St. Louis ERT, Washington Conservation Corps, AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC), Conservation Corps of Minnesota & Iowa, Hoopa Tribal Civilian Community Corps (TCCC), Volunteer Iowa, and Texas Conservation Corps.

In 2015 members assisted with Winter Storm Thor, the Yeager Landslide, spring flooding, and long-term recovery throughout the state.

Update on Flint, Michigan

AmeriCorps Members responding to Flint, MI

CNCS Program Wide Response: In response to the Flint Water Crisis, the Corporation for National and Community Service continues to coordinate with local authorities and organizations, including the Michigan Community Service Commission, the United Way, the City of Flint, and other federal and nonprofit partners.

In total, 46 national service members have been deployed or are engaged in the response efforts:

One nine-member AmeriCorps NCCC team is working with the United Way of Genesee County to support public health education efforts.

Over 5,00 cases of water distributed

4,000 replacement filters distributed

Over 6,000 homes canvassed

Six RSVP Senior Corps volunteers served as public information specialists.

Four AmeriCorps VISTA members placed at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Flint have helped to coordinate the water donations and deliveries from Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Holland, Boys & Girls Clubs of Cleveland and Boys & Girls Club of Hudson County, Pennsylvania. We estimate that these water deliveries brought approximately 1,000 cases of bottled water, 200 gallon jugs and other essential supplies such as hand sanitizer and baby wipes.

Two AmeriCorps members – one with Food Corps, one with United Way Worldwide AmeriCorps – are assisting with information distribution and donations management.

27 Operation AmeriCorps members serving in schools have imported water safety and health and nutrition curriculum into their lessons and after-school programming.

13 American Red Cross AmeriCorps members supported response operations.

The Michigan Community Service Commission, is supporting the United Way of Genesee County, the American Red Cross, and other partners to operate the Flint Volunteer Reception Center and website (www.flintvolunteer.com).
