Inclusive service as a pathway to employment for people with disabilities

Dear colleagues,

Nearly all of us are connected to people with disabilities – whether they’re alumni in our service programs, currently serving, are determining whether to serve or whether they are our friends and family.  As CNCS commemorates the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act this week, we release a joint letter between CNCS and Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy.  This letter highlights the connection between inclusive service opportunities and using service as a pathway to employment for people with disabilities. It also introduces two new resources to share with your network:

• Fostering Inclusive Volunteering and Service Learning –  a guide for youth service professionals which details how youth benefit from volunteering, different types of service opportunities, and strategies to assist youth to prepare for, access, and learn from their experiences. 
  
  
• Toolkit for AmeriCorps alumni with disabilities transitioning to employment – this is a collection of resources regarding pre-employment and employment issues for people with disabilities, special programs, government services, and mentorship and networking opportunities.  

Please take a moment to share these new resources with your contacts in the spirit of inclusion.
