National Service Supports Guam Following Typhoon Dolphin

Typhoon Dolphin: Guam

AmeriCorps members serving with programs from the Serve Guam! Commission are supporting the American Red Cross and FEMA with damage assessments following Typhoon Dolphin's impact on Guam Friday May 15th, bringing heavy rain and winds of more than 100 miles per hour. 

FEMA Corps, a unit of AmeriCorps NCCC, has AmeriCorps members supporting Incident Management Assistance Teams on Guam and a team at FEMA Region 9 supporting the Regional Response Coordination Center.

Serve Guam! AmeriCorps Alums are supporting the local governments with volunteer hour documentation. 

Additional national service resources are on standby should a request be made for more support.


Severe Weather and Tornadoes

-- Van, TX

AmeriCorps Members registering the hundreds of volunteers that have come to help the community of Van, TX

AmeriCorps members from Texas Conservation Corps have set up a Volunteer Reception Center following severe weather and tornadoes that struck Van, Texas on May 11. So far they have registered 600 volunteers.  AmeriCorps is coordinating with VOAD partners Samaritan's Purse, Texas Baptist Men, Southern Baptist Convention, Team Rubicon, Operation Blessing, and Seventh Day Adventists to record volunteer hours, dispatch work orders, staff the Volunteer Reception Center (VRC), and run volunteer field operations.

The VRC is located in the Van High School Stadium parking lot, located on the north side of highway 110.  The VRC will be open daily 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. every day.

In addition, homeowners in need of recovery assistance can visit the Multi-Agency Resources Center (MARC) to fill out a homeowner intake form. The VRC will then connect homeowners with volunteer support. 

Emergency Management Officials request that all volunteers register with the VRC or volunteer agencies. Organizations looking to partner or coordinate should email vanresponseVRC@gmail.com.

-- Bridge Creek, OK

An AmeriCorps team is  supporting the American Red Cross with disaster assessment and logistics following severe weather and tornadoes from severe weather and tornadoes on May 6 across the Bridge Creek area of Oklahoma as well as Oklahoma County.

Members partnered with ARC volunteers to perform damage assessments on homes throughout the Oklahoma City metro area, supporting the Multi Agency Resource Center (MARC) with data entry from the damage assessments and creating maps for the ARC database. They are also supporting MARC with direct survivor assistance – assisting them with checking in and paperwork. In addition, AmeriCorps is also supporting ARC Logistics working with supplies and warehousing, over the weekend these members supported tracking and sorting of tarps, work gloves, and other needed supplies.

-- Delmont, SD

Following severe weather and tornadoes in Delmont, SD on May 10, local AmeriCorps members have provided support to response efforts. CNCS has been coordinating with VOAD partner NECHAMA and state commission Serve South Dakota to provide additional support as necessary.
