On January 16, 2026, Florida submitted a request for a new five-year Medicaid section 1115(a) demonstration entitled, "Florida Institutions for Mental Disease Section 1115 Demonstration." This demonstration aims to provide coverage of services based in institutions of mental diseases (IMDs), such as substance abuse detoxification, recovery support services, and psychiatric treatment, for individuals in Medicaid diagnosed with serious mental illness or serious emotional disorder (SMI/SED) and/or substance use disorder (SUD). The demonstration targets individuals enrolled in Florida's Statewide Medicaid Managed Care (SMMC) program. The federal public comment period will be open from February 3, 2026 through March 5, 2026.
