On July 17, Alabama submitted a request for a new five-year Medicaid section 1115(a) demonstration entitled “Alabama Substance Use Disorder Demonstration”. This demonstration proposes to cover treatment and recovery services provided to Medicaid-enrolled individuals in Institutions for Mental Diseases (IMDs) for opioid use disorder (OUD) and substance use disorder (SUD) services. Additionally, this demonstration proposes extending limited Medicaid coverage to qualified low-income individuals without health insurance screened as meeting the criteria for SUD in specific areas of the state. The federal public comment period will be open from August 1, 2023 through August 31, 2023.
